Onimusha-Way-Of-The-Sword

With the release of Nioh 3 becoming a big success for the series and for Team Ninja, fans are now hungry for more samurai action games. That said, one series is preparing to make a huge comeback this year that will please newcomers and thrill longtime fans. That series I’m talking about is the Onimusha Series which hasn’t received a major installment since 2006 Dawn Of Dreams. Thus it been more then two decades, and now the time has come for Onimusha to return as one of the best action series. This new installment titled as Onimusha: Way Of The Sword follows a new protagonist and continues on the series tradition of using famous film actors. The game follows a samurai named Miyamoto Musashi who is modeled, after famous late Japanese actor, Toshiro Mifune.

You play as Miyamoto Musashi who journeys across a dark fantasy version of Kyoto during the Edo Period to combat against rival swordmen, demons and other supernatural threats. As a skilled samurai, Musashi’s main weapon of choice is a sword which can be used to strike down enemies, parry their attacks or deflect incoming projectiles. A prolonged parry will ultimately allow Musashi to “steer” his enemy and thus calling them to fall toward a certain direction. Musashi can also enter a “guard” stance, that ultimately allows him to stand his ground, and block attacks from all directions. Striking and parrying will deplete an opponent’s stamina, ultimately allowing players to use a “Break Issen”, a move which can, instantly executes an enemy by dismembering them. Performing consecutive parries or, dodges grants Musashi combat buffs, enabling him to swiftly execute, enemies in succession or unleash a multi-hit attack, respectively. He can also utilize the enviroment to gain the advantage against his enemies, such as flipping a table and thus utilzing it as a temporary shield.

Thoughout the game, Musashi is equipped with the iconic “Oni Gauntlet”, a sentient weapon which allows him to consume the souls of defeated enemies. The game has three types of souls which are, Yellow Souls to replenish the player’s health, Red Souls can be used to by upgrades. And there’re Blue Souls that allows players to use “Oni Armaments”, which are special weapons that deal large damage to enemies. By hitting enemies with these armaments, in turn provides players with Yellow Souls, to quickly replenish their health during the heat of combat. Using Break Issen on boss characters doesn’t, execute them instantly, though it grant players a choice, to deal massive amount of damage, or gain more souls. With the gauntlet, Musashi can also activate “Oni Vision”, that allows him to identify the location of all demons and enemies within an area. Way Of The Sword is a largely linear game, though it also has open areas, and side quests that allows players to explore.

Onimusha is one of my all time favorite series and like many longtime fans, I’m excited that we are getting a new mainline installment. As for many newcomers, they can play the remastered, of Onimusha Warlords and Onimusha 2: Samurai’s Destiny to get an understanding about the series. Especially if you’ve enjoyed playing the recently released Nioh 3, but hungery for more samurai action, look no further then this iconic series. Though the release date for Onimusha: Way Of The Sword hasn’t been confirmed but can expect to see a possible new trailer in a few months. Thus it’s pretty clear that, 2026 is packed with upcoming action games and Onimusha is defintely among this awesome lineup.
